AIA UK Building Tour

The AIA UK Chapter cordially invites you to the next in our ongoing series of building tours:

81-87 Weston Street, London By Allford Hall Monaghan Morris

Client: Solidspace

Post-Tour Discussion to follow.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris recently completed the Weston Street residential project located in the heart of Bermondsey, south London. The buildings’ stepped massing is a response to the differing neighbourhood scales, while the brickwork façade and metal windows reference the warehouse aesthetic of the city. The product of a close collaboration between AHMM and developer Solidspace, the scheme provides eight split level apartments and an open-plan office space to the ground floor. The apartments’ open-plan arrangement of living, kitchen and study space across three levels creates a complex play of interlocking units. Amenity space is provided by large cantilevered balconies and roof terraces. The project was awarded the WAF Future Project Residential 2016

Meeting Point: Guy Street Park (SE1 3SH) just south of the project.

1.5 CES Credit (minimum) is available and places are limited.

Tickets are £3 / £5 for members/non-members, and all proceeds benefit the Noel Hill Travel Bursary.

Spaces are arranged around a nine-storey shared atrium with areas for flexible and informal meeting. A communal roof terrace with views over London provides additional space for informal gathering and events. At ground level an open route connects the external street life at Finsbury Square with a new entrance at Worship Street featuring a ‘ride-in’ cycle ramp, cycle parking and changing facilities. AIA UK Building Tour - Ironmonger Row Baths

The AIA UK Chapter cordially invites you to the next in our ongoing series of building tours:

Ironmonger Row Baths

by Tim Ronalds Architects

Tim Ronalds will give a short introduction to the project, followed by a general building tour and discussion.

Meeting Point: Outside main entrance

2 CES Credits are available and admission is free of charge.

Places are very limited. Please RSVP online by clicking here.

Ironmonger Row Baths was built in 1931, designed by Alfred Cross PRIBA, a distinguished architect who specialised in public baths. In 1938, Cross’s son Kenneth added two swimming pools to the side, with a small Turkish baths in the basement. It was listed Grade II in 2006.

Tim Ronalds Architects design repositions the entrance to the Baths to face St Luke’s Gardens. This allows the building to be made accessible and exploits the lightwell spaces between the 1931 and 1938 buildings to make a new coherent circulation.

The building was made to feel lighter, more transparent and more welcoming, but has a new, durable, civic quality that will withstand another fifty years of public use. The project was technically extremely complex and achieved BREEAM Excellent standard.

The building has received several awards:

  • RIBA National Award for Architecture
  • RIBA London Award for Architecture
  • AJ Retrofit Award
  • Civic Trust Award Winner
