Continuing Education Credits

All US and UK registered architects have to undertake continuing education (CE) every year to maintain their license. The AIA UK Chapter runs a very active programme of events throughout the year and nearly every one has a CE component.

Each hour of CE counts as one Learning Unit (LU); all US state licensing boards require a certain number of those LUs to be Health and Safety and Welfare (LU/HSW). US states have differing requirements, so if you are a US-registered architect please check your state requirements and timeline carefully.

To maintain your AIA membership, you are required to complete 18 LUs in total per calendar year, 12 of which must be LU/HSW. You can earn the required LUs directly through AIA UK: all you need to do is register for an event with your AIA Membership number and attend. We have many opportunities to reach the total 18 LUs (including 12 HSWs) required by AIA. For example:

  • Climate Action talk - 1 LU/HSW

  • Webinar on a legal topic - 1 LU

  • Three building tours (1.5 LU/HSW each) - 4.5 LU/HSWs

  • Two movie nights (1.5 LUs each) - 3 LUs

  • Emerging Professionals mentoring event - 1 LU

  • Summer bike tour - 6 LU/HSWs

  • Keynote Lecture - 1.5 LU/HSW

  • Technical Lecture - 1 LU

U.S. states and other licensing bodies will generally accept the AIA transcript as proof of the continuing education requirement for maintaining a license.

As well as attending live AIA UK events, you can access more continuing education through our Past events library. Many past events are recorded, and those with a quiz are available for members to watch and earn CES credits when they wish.

For even more ways to get your CE, check out the AIA International past events library and find out more about AIA Continuing Education offerings via the AIA website.
