Description
The Elizabeth line opened in 2022 after 12 years of design, marking London’s most significant transport investment in over 20 years. Carrying more than 800,000 passengers daily, it has transformed travel across the capital and earned international recognition, including the 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize.
The line-wide design team — Grimshaw, Maynard, AtkinsRéalis and Equation — developed the strategy that unites the network’s 10 new stations into a coherent, intuitive system. Working within the wider Crossrail architectural team, they collaborated with practices including John McAslan + Partners, Weston Williamson + Partners, Hawkins\Brown, Aedas, Wilkinson Eyre, BDP, Adamson Associates, Allies and Morrison, and Fereday Pollard.
“Descending into the vast network of tunnels feels like entering a portal to the future, where commuter chaos becomes effortless. This is architecture for the digital age — rewriting the rules of accessible public transport and setting a bold new standard for civic infrastructure,” said Muyiwa Oki, Past President of RIBA, on behalf of the Stirling Prize jury.
