Description
The new dining and library building at Godolphin & Latymer is small but mighty, solving several problems in one fell swoop:
The ground floor retains the charming cloistered façade to provide extra dining space/a multi-purpose room that opens onto two courtyards
The new library is generous and welcoming. On the first floor, younger pupils can pick up a book and sit on beanbags, while the second floor features nooks for older pupils to study in groups or alone
Before, poor circulation meant going up and down several flights of stairs in different buildings. Now, a new central staircase links three buildings, putting the library at the heart of the school and linking it to the sixth form centre (which was also refurbished as part of the project)
The perforated metal veil complements the surrounding brick buildings delicately. Glazed links connect to existing buildings with a light touch.
The building resolves longstanding issues of circulation, accessibility and piecemeal development, with a modern design that is sensitive to its conservation context.
