Meeting Point: Ground Floor Reception Area. Arrive early to view the Summer Show before the tour.
Hawkins\Brown completely overhauled the school's former Wates House campus to create the new 8,500-square-metre building, to accommodate 1,000 staff and students. This more than doubles the building's original capacity of 380 students and 90 staff when it first opened 40 years ago.
Renamed 22 Gordon Street, the building is the first major project of Transforming UCL, a decade-long programme of improvements to the university's Bloomsbury campus. Hawkins\Brown carried out a "deep retrofit" of the original building, using the original concrete framework but completely reconfiguring the interior and adding two extra levels to take the height to six storeys. The studio also added a full-height extension to the south of the existing building and faced the whole structure in grey brick.
The Bartlett School of Architecture will be hosting their Summer Show of over 650 students exhibiting a range of inventive, creative and visual work including models, drawings, films, multimedia installations and digital fabrications. This will be the first Summer Show to take advantage of the new spaces in the refurbished building.
