AIA UK Chapter Signature Events

Annual General Meeting - January

The Annual General Meeting of the UK chapter includes the election of the board and officers, reports on the preceding year and plans for the year to come.  There are plenty of opportunities to socialize over wine and nibbles with colleagues, members and friends.

Excellence in Design Awards - April

This is an evening gala with wine and food, presentation of the awards and some live musical accompaniment. Recent winners include David Chipperfield Architects with Julian Harrap, Niall McLaughlin Architects, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners with Vidal y Asociados arquitectos. Each year's jury is comprised of eminent practitioners, academics and critics who meet to review the entries in person.

Summer Gala - June

We mark the beginning of summer with a gala held in an unusual and unique venue. In 2010 the gala was held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in Shoreditch, London with an installation by Scottish artist Claire Barclay. The Gallery's Director Iwona Blazwick OBE, the noted critic Alice Rawsthorn and architect Farshid Moussavi all spoke about the architecture of the gallery and related issues. The evening was enlivened by exquisite food, wine and a jazz band.

City Explorer Conference - September / October

This event is normally held within the UK or Europe and combines lectures, walking and building tours and social events. The 2010 Excursion was held in Edinburgh and Glasgow and attendees were able to visit many historical and modern sites, including the Scottish Parliament and the Edinburgh Castle.

Student Design Charrette - October / November

This is a popular one-day event in which participants design collaboratively in teams of around 6 to 8 students, mentored by a seasoned practicing architect. The design challenge is a brief based on a nearby site. At the end of the day, an eminent jury will review the work and award prizes.
