AIA UK 2012 Excellence in Design Awards - Call for Entries

The American Institute of Architects UK Chapter is pleased to announce its 2012 Excellence in Design Awards Programme.  Entries are sought from architects based in Britain, and from architects throughout the world for built projects in the UK.

 

The Awards Programme recognises and honours excellence in design:

·        By UK-based Architects for projects anywhere in the world

·        By Architects anywhere in the world for projects in the UK

·        By Students of Architecture currently enrolled in UK Universities 

        and US Students involved in UK foreign exchange programmes in the UK.

2011 AIA UK Annual Design Awards Winners

At the annual Awards Gala, held at the Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells, London, on Wednesday 13 April, the American Institute of Architects UK Chapter honoured excellence in design.  Eligible work had to be completed buildings and be designed by UK architects for projects anywhere in the world, and by architects of any nationality for buildings in the UK.  Four winners were announced.  Jury members presented the winning projects to an audience of AIA members, guests and entrants.  The Gala was sponsored by Desso. 2011 WINNERS

Winner – European Projects:
Terry Pawson Architects – VISUAL – Centre for Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, Carlow, Ireland 

Winner – Small Projects:
Hugh Strange Architects – Strange House, London, England

Winner – International Projects:
Zaha Hadid Architects – Guangzhou Opera House, Guangzhou, China

Winner – Renovation:
Haworth Tompkins – The London Library, London, England

In parallel with the professional awards, the chapter recognised future talent through the Noel Hill Student Travel Awards Programme.  Entries are sought from students currently enrolled in UK universities for a portfolio of their work and a proposal for study/travel experience abroad.  

This year a single award was given to Robin Flindell from Sheffield University.  Robin will be using the £1000 prize to assist in his travels to Teotihuacan, near Mexico City and to The Forbidden City, Beijing, China.  Robin will be continuing his research into a Universal Geometry by studying these cultures and their architectural archaeology.
